i haven’t had a ton of opportunities to shop for men over the holidays, mostly because my family is comprised of all women, and my guy friends have never been of the gift-exchanging sort. and of course, i’m single, and have been for quite a while. which means i basically only buy gifts for women. that being said, i had a fabulous time putting together this gift guide for gents. let’s just say i am doing some imaginary shopping for my imaginary boyfriend (who of course is the type to make fancy cocktails and use fancy beard oil). hey, if this is imaginary, he can be whoever i want him to be, right?

for those of you with actual men in your lives, godspeed. and here’s hoping you like this handy dandy gentleman’s gift guide.

happy shopping!

Holiday Gift Guide 2013_Covermy mantra for gift giving is simple: give people what they wouldn’t buy for themselves. this varies from person to person, of course, but for most of us, it’s those little luxuries. the things we see and say, “ooh, i’d really love that”, but then do not buy. like the uber expensive nail polish with perfectly oversized flecks of glitter. or that fancy schmancy lip balm. or those cashmere gloves that are oh so soft but not exactly oh so necessary. gifts should give people a little bit of light in their heart, a little bit of sparkle in their step. the best gifts, in my opinion, aren’t necessarily the ones that people will use day to day, but the ones that add a little bit of luxury to their everyday. get them the things they’d want, but would never, ever, buy for themselves.

nowhere is the mantra more applicable than when shopping for your besties. see, besties deserve the best, because they are the best. they’re the girls that you call when you’re crying so hard snot is dripping down your face and you can barely catch your breath. they’re the ones that show up with your favorite kinds of candy and a mary-kate and ashley movie when you’ve had a rough day. they’re the ones who know when to tell you it’ll all be okay, and when to tell it to you straight.

i don’t have a ton of close girlfriends, but i can count them on one hand, and i feel pretty damn lucky to have each and every one of them. here are a few of the things i’m thinking of getting them this holiday season.

though kindles and ipads dominate the world, paper hasn’t gone away. not just yet. people may prefer to read their books and their magazines on e-readers, but when it comes to calendars, cards, and pretty pretty prints, it’s all about paper. this guide is for the girl who still prefers a handwritten note to an email, the one who has a framed gallery wall worth coveting, the one who keeps a true calendar on her desk and a true agenda in her purse. you know the type. these gifts are for her.

the other day, i went into sephora to purchase a clarisonic for one of the folks on my holiday gift list, and came out with three free gifts. why? because i had over 1000 points to use on my beauty insider rewards card. why did i have that many? because i am an bonafide beauty addict. makeup, hair, nails…you name it, i’ve got it. i can’t even bear to show you my makeup drawer (while well organized, i exhibit some slight hoarding tendencies in the eyeshadow and lipstick departments). it’s embarrassing, especially given how little makeup i actually wear on a day to day basis. and yet, i’ve got about 5 different shades of fuschia lipstick. i’ve got at least 4 red lip stains (for the record, my favorite is actually a drugstore brand!). i can’t even tell you how many tubes of lip balm i have. i really can’t. and then there’s the eyeshadow. and the glittery eye shadow, which, yes, is still a thing in my life at the ripe old age of 27. i know there will come a time when i will outgrow glitter, but i simply can’t see that time coming any time soon. maybe when i’m pregnant? there’s something sad about a pregnant woman wearing eye glitter, right?

anywho, suffice it to say, i know my shit when it comes to beauty. i own almost everything i’ve featured in this post, so i can say it’s sarah tested, sarah approved. my personal faves include the best glitter nail polish under the sun (hands down, i promise), my beloved clarisonic (bye bye milia), the best all in one highlighter/shimmer stick i’ve ever tried, body oil so luxurious you’ll swear you’re royalty, and peppermint blotting papers, for when you’re sweating on the subway in your parka come february. trust me, all of these gifts will make the ladies in your life happy (and maybe even some of the gents, too).

now, let’s get to it, shall we? beauty junkies, unite!

have you ever heard the acronym “GSD”? it stands for get shit done, and it’s a modern working woman’s mantra if i’ve ever heard one.  i love technology just as much as the next girl, but sometimes, it feels like we’re all just so damn plugged inmost of us have desk jobs, but our screen time doesn’t end there. we get home, and there’s facebook to check, blogs to read, instagram photos to like and comment on. social media is never-ending, like our to-do lists. i know i’m not alone in feeling overwhelmed from time to time, whether it’s at my day job, or at home on the weekdays, struggling to check items off my list. here’s the thing: work will always be work (even when it’s work that you love), so why not make your workspace pretty? i’m a big fan of streamlined acrylic tape dispensers and gold staplers (desktop glitter! what could be better?). and there’s nothing like a pop of pink, whether it’s in the form of an organizer or some thin highlighters. if you have to take notes, you might as well do so in a bright, cheery, lime green notebook. and if you have to organize documents, you might as well do so in a quirky strawberry folder. because let’s face it. when your shit is pretty, it’s easier to get shit done.

is it just me, or have gemstones been having a moment lately? okay, maybe it’s more than a moment. they’ve been popular for at least a few years now, and don’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing. last year, when i searched for agate coasters, they were a bit hard to find. this year, they’re everywhere, from leif to jonathan adler. last week’s all that glitters guide highlighted gold, but this guide is about sparkle that comes in all different colors. there’s something so beautiful about what nature creates all on its own. amazing to think that these have been carved from the rock face somewhere. salt of the earth, to be sure. these pieces would make great gifts for the gal who loves to host, but even for those who don’t, you’ll find some fun accent pieces. a pyrite heart paperweight would be just as at home on a desk as it would on an etagere full of collected curios. druzy studs are sophisticated and simple, but offer a sense of eclectic edge. meanwhile, an amethyst candle holder will set a room ablaze in the best kind of way. and if all else fails: a chic wine stopper is always a good idea.

for as long as i’ve been reading lifestyle blogs, the holiday gift guides that surface around this time of year have been my favorite pieces of content. there’s something so fun about a good shopping roundup, especially when you’re busy making a list and checking it twice…for friends, coworkers, family members and more.

i recently invested in photoshop, and my first order of business is to create some kickass holiday gift guides in collage form. bear with me, they might not be all that fancy at first, but here’s hoping that creating these guides will be photoshop bootcamp for me. here’s the deal: every monday and wednesday from now until mid-december, i’ll be posting a gift guide. that’s 10 opportunities to shop ’til you drop (or until your fingers cramp) and more than enough time to wrap all of your chosen goodies.

first up: my favorite color of all colors: gold. all that glitters, ladies and gents. ain’t nothing better than solid gold, amiright? everyone loves a little bit of sparkle, and there’s no time like the holidays to spread a little shimmer. below, 13 pieces that will help ensure no one doubts your commitment to sparkle motion.
